What is bot protection / CAPTCHA?
Bot and spam protection is used to prevent automated, unwanted activities and spam on websites. A CAPTCHA is a short test to show that the user is a human and not a computer programme (bot).
The abbreviation CAPTCHA stands for: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart".
In the case of Dualoo, this protection is used to ensure that online applications / registrations cannot be used as a gateway for unwanted activities. In concrete terms, this means that only real people can apply, not bots.
Privacy by Design - Activation Friendly Captcha
Dualoo follows the "Privacy by Default" approach. This means that the most privacy-friendly setting is always activated in Dualoo. Therefore, the paid CAPTCHA from Friendly Captcha is already activated by default for new Dualoo demo accounts from 06/06/2024.
If the deactivation of the CAPTCHA from Friendly Captcha is desired, admins can easily deactivate this in the settings. You can see how to do this here.

Friendly Captcha is privacy-friendly and fully GDPR-compliant and DSG-compliant.
No tedious image tagging tasks for users.

Based on proof-of-work mechanisms and advanced risk signalling, Friendly Captcha consistently stops spam and abuse.
No personal data is stored for the verification process. As a protective measure, the IP address is anonymised via one-way hashing before it is stored in the Friendly Captcha database.
The EU endpoint version of Friendly Captcha ensures that personal data is processed exclusively within the EU by European subcontractors.

The test is automatically carried out in the background based on the user's behaviour on the website, which means that there is no tedious marking to do, such as clicking on images or copying down blurred numbers. However, it is not possible to submit an application without passing this test.

What costs are incurred when using Friendly Captcha?
The costs are calculated in simple package sizes, depending on the size of the company. The costs are invoiced with the subscription invoice.

Alternative turnstyles from Cloudflare
The CAPTCHA Turnstile from Cloudflare is available free of charge in Dualoo. Cloudflare's Turnstile captcha is also privacy-friendly and the user data is not used for any other purposes or passed on to third parties. The test is also carried out automatically in the background based on user behaviour on the website, which means that no tedious marking tasks such as clicking on images or copying blurred numbers have to be carried out.

Main difference Turnstile vs Friendly Captcha:
Data traffic / encryption of the IP address: With Friendly Captcha, the IP address is encrypted, which makes surfing the internet more anonymous. This ensures that the captcha service cannot use personal data, in this case the IP address. Turnstile does not encrypt the IP address, but the data is not used for marketing purposes and is not passed on to third parties.
Data centre location: Applicant data is never transferred to unsafe third countries when used with Friendly Captcha, which is unlikely with Turnstile, but cannot be ruled out technically. The data centre that is closest to the user is usually selected for the turnstile.
Universal browser support: Friendly Captcha also supports very old browser versions (from 2013). For the Turnstile CAPTCHA to work properly, website visitors must use a current version of a common browser. Older devices, older versions of common browsers, as well as alternative browser providers and outdated browsers such as Internet Explorer are not supported. This may prevent applicants from applying.
CookiesFriendly Captcha does not need to be selected or mentioned in the cookie banner. However, Turnstile does because it stores the IP address.
Reputation: Friendly Captcha is a familiar concept to applicants who are familiar with data protection and is therefore a calling card for data protection-compliant interaction with website visitors. Turnstile has a very good reputation among free providers, but is not recommended by Dualoo because we always use the most data protection-friendly option as standard (privacy by default).
Deactivate Friendly Captcha
If you wish to use Cloudflare's free CAPTCHA variant of Turnstile, Friendly Captcha can be easily disabled under Apps & Integrations. There will be no refund for any payments already made for the use of Friendly Captcha.
